Jo-Ann hunts for DFW locations

Friday, September 16, 2011, 5:00am CDT Steven R. Thompson Staff Writer - Dallas Business Journal Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores is evaluating its Texas real estate, looking to open three more stores in the DFW area, according to Steve Lieberman of Dallas-based The Retail Connection. The Ohio-based fabric retailer is analyzing its real estate across the nation, he said. Lieberman and his team at The Retail Connection have worked with the store to open two locations in Rockwall and Denton as well as rightsizing, or scaling down, a Grapevine location. “They are looking at every single store,” Lieberman said. “They are evaluating every single aspect of that store, the size of the store, the productivity of the store. Is it in the right location for the trade area?” Jo-Ann stores range from 10,000 square feet to 25,000 square feet, Lieberman said. “You can’t always justify 25,000 square feet of space, so they’ve come up with a prototype that they can get down to 10,000 to 12,000 square feet in smaller markets,” Lieberman said. Most Dallas locations are in the larger format, said Margaret Skinner, communications director for Jo-Ann. Lieberman said his team is finalizing three more stores in the DFW area for the company, which has around 15 stores in the area. Jo-Ann has an expansion plan to open 60 new stores across the country by the end of this year, said Skinner. The retailer plans to open 60 stores each year for the next two years, she said. Other retailers have set their sights on North Texas. “Texas and the Southwest are certainly getting a disproportionate share of their openings because of the strength of our market,” Lieberman said.
