BISNOW Retail Summit 2013

BISNOW Retail Summit 2013

Why Texas has Sales Appeal
Texas created 22% all of new US jobs last year and has the top two metros for people relocating—Dallas followed by Houston. (You may have noticed longer lines at the DMV... somehow.)

Retailers want to be here, too, we learned at the fourth annual Bisnow DFW Retail Summit yesterday at the Westin Galleria. A crowd of 250 heard The Retail Connection co-founder and prez Alan Shor extol the virtues of Texas. He says it's those reasons, among others, that make new retailers want to be here and the existing retailers want to expand. (We have not yet begun to shop!) It's the least amount of risk to open stores here, he says. And, there's no risk in visiting our photo gallery from the event by clicking here. You may see yourself or someone you know. Alan, whose company marked its10th anniversary last month (does that mean we should get him a diamond-studded shopping center), says theconsumer basemakes up 70% of the nation's economy. And, the private sector has continued to perform despite the uncertainty in the political arena. His favorite song may be apropos for what's going on in DC: REO Speedwagon'sRiding the Storm Out. And, something out of the ordinary we learned about him: his first job was working in an underwear manufacturing plant.

Top Golf chief development officer Randy Starr, Imran, Alan, Gensler business development strategist MarshaGetto-Aikens(our moderator), and Kim. Marsha, whose favorite song is Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen, tells us by 2025, the consumer base will grow by one billion people with more than half of them in emerging markets. (It puts a whole new perspective on "you can't have some if you didn't bring enough for everyone.") That means increased demand for retail in many countries; and retailers must localize design and business strategies based on cultural tastes, corporate values, civic regulations, and a variety of design standards. With 44 worldwide locations, she says Gensler has worked with clients from Starbucks to KFC, and the Gap, among many others. Randy says Top Golf is in growth mode, opening its third location in the Metroplex (the fifth in Texas) this spring in The Colony. (They could open a million locations, we're still gonna slice our drive.) A nationwide expansion plan kicks off this spring with the opening of sites in Phoenix and Atlanta. It's not always easy to find the best locations with the right demographics and the 12 acres required for a facility, Randy says. But, starting in January, Top Golf will break ground in new and existing markets every 30 days.
